Let's look at,
            2.84  ÷ 0.2
2.84  is the dividend. (The number being divided.)
0.2   is the divisor.(The number you are dividing by.)

In this problem  we are dividing decimal by a decimal.
When dividing decimals you need to convert the divisor (0.2 in this problem) into a whole number (2), by moving the decimal point one place to the right. To balance this out you need to move the decimal point in the dividend (2.84 in this problem), one place to the right. So that the dividend is now 28.4.
The division is now  28.4 ÷ 2  = 14.2

Now let's look at,   2.83   ÷ 0.3
                              28.3   ÷ 3 =  9.433333........
In this answer 3 is repeating itself. This is called a recurring decimal .

eg.       9.43333......     3 repeats itself.

1.2323232323.....     the group 23 repeats itself.

Recurring decimals
A decimal that repeats one or a group of numbers. They are often written with dots over the group of repeating numbers.
eg.

When dividing a decimal by 10,100 or 1000 simply move the decimal point 1,2 or 3 places to the left.

Find the value of 70.4 ÷ 10
Move the decimal point 1 place to the left.
That is  70.4 ÷ 10 = 7.04

Find the value of   1676.85  ÷  100  =  16.7685

Examples

1. Evaluate  91.84  ÷  4.8

Step 1.  Convert the divisor (In this problem it is 4.8) into a whole number (48)

Step 2. Move the decimal point in the diviend one place to the right to balance it out.
             91.84 becomes 918.4

The problem becomes 918.4 ÷ 48
                                   918.4 ÷ 48  =  19.3333...
The answer is a recurring decimal.

2.  Evaluate 96  ÷  2.5
                  96   dividend,        2.5 divisor

Step 1.  Convert the divisor (In this problem it is 2.5) into a whole number (25)

Step 2. Move the decimal point in the diviend one place to the right to balance it out.
             96 or 96.0 becomes 960

The problem becomes 960 ÷ 25  =  38.4
