In teaching maths and numeracy for general education and CGEA courses many teachers use
everyday materials such as newspaper ads, brochures, household bills, bus and train
time-tables, road maps etc and generate their own exercises and tasks to give learners a
real life and meaningful context. However, there are a number of published resources which
are quite popular with teachers. Here is a short list of such books and resources:
Breaking the Maths Barrier by Beth Marr and Sue Helme.
Strength in Numbers: A resource book for teaching
adult numeracy by R. Goddard, B. Marr and J. Martin.
Mathematics: A New Beginning - A resource book for teachers of adults
returning to study. Edited by Sue Helme and Beth Marr.
Maths for the Real World- Book 1 and 2 by D.B.
Kimball.
Developmental Mathematics - Book 1 to 4 by A Thomson and E. Wrightson.
