Class Exercises for You to Do

Using Language with  Technology.
  • In today's class we will use an on-line lesson to learn how to use a Search Engine Effectively.
  • We will then investigate the way people use language and modern technologies, especially in 
  • Finally we will discover New Words, or Learn to Use Old Worlds by looking at the ABC's Word Map of Australia
Search Engine Language
Click on QuickStart Guide to Searching the Web, this will open a slide show which you can view , the slide show asks you to have a topic , write this topic down. View the whole show and use your topic in place of the example. Make sure you are familiar with all the new terms.
 
You will be presenting your findings in the Class Exercises Area. 
The New English

To many people SMS, chat rooms and email have become a way of life.  Researchers have noticed that the English used in these "places" is a little different from the English we find in novels, letters and University essays.

But how are they all used ?  Have a look at the Telstra Chat rooms , there should be no need to register , just scroll down to the list and pick one that interests you look around at others, try and understand what is  going on.

Old and New English 

Finally go to the ABC's Word Map site , this shows a host of regional uses of Words

Identify a list of words new to you , take a note of their origins , regions and meanings. This information will also be posted on The Elephant L Discussion board.

We will be using  Victoria Universities on-line Learning Environment  WebCT as a place to present your findings and to engage in some chat .

Exercise One

Click on WebCT. A new window will open and ask for your user ID and password. If you are a student, your WebCT User Name is a lower case s followed by your VU student number. For example, if your VU student number is 1234567 then your WebCT User Name is s1234567.

Your next screen should show you the name of the all the subjects you are enrolled in, click HEB0041 .

  • Click on the Discussion List in the left hand column

  • .  Click on the Heading Searching Results 

  • Click on Compose Discussion  Message 

  • write down your search topic, the search string you used and the address of the 3 most useful sites you found 

Exercise Two

The chat area is where you can ask me questions , I will be on-line to help you.

After you have mastered the art of understanding the acronyms, slang and smiley's of Emailish then you must have a go your self.
Each student is to devise a short paragraph written in this new language, post it in a chat room.  
Then each student is to translate someone else's paragraph and post it back to check meaning.  
There are ten rooms named after animals. Pick your favourite, if it is full go to the next room.

Exercise Three

Return to the Elephant from Exercise One.  This time select the New Words link and type in 10 new words with their meanings you have discovered from The ABC Word Map site
