Module:  EPC 87
MEASUREMENT – INTRODUCTION

This module is to develop your knowledge and skills so you can accurately measure a variety of things in a manufacturing organisation.

It’s intended to be practical and learner-centred.

You’re encouraged to use all types of measuring instruments, even those you don’t normally use. This will help develop your understanding of the concepts of measurement in all areas.

When you’ve finished you will be able to:

  • identify and understand the different systems of measurement
  • understanding how measurement is used
  • identification and of the units of measurements
  • convert of different units from one form to another
  • understand the needs for and methods of caring for measuring equipment
  • select and use the correct measuring instrument to determine the actual measurements of a component
  • convert actual measurements of a component from system to another (ie metric to imperial)
  • understand the relationship between measurement and quality control
  • understand quality control procedures within an engineering company

There are no prerequisites for this module and it’s not a prerequisite for any other module.

You may apply for recognition of knowledge and skills that you may have already gained. The provider should give you credit towards completion of this module when satisfied that you have achieved competency in a given learning out come.

Learning Outcomes:

You’ll be able to:

  1. Classify the different systems and units measurement including linear, temperature and weight.
  2. Use units of measurement to calculate and determine the dimensions and specifications of specified components.
  3. Measure a variety of components using various measuring instruments
  4. Identify the role of measurement in quality control.
