Spreadsheets in the Classroom
Exercise 2

I always like to Introduce software with a Sampler ExerciseJust like Needlecraft, but in Software

For Our  Exercise in Spreadsheets we will Use

 MS Excel

  • open a spreadsheet file
  • save our work with appropriate file names and titles
  • Exercise 2 will be entering and managing data about the Commonwealth Games

1

  • Close the Eye Colour Files

  • Open a New File, choose a new Workbook save and call it GamesRanking

2

We are going to create a spreadsheet that will give us the Commonwealth games rankings based on the number of medals won and the population of each country.

We will need to create columns for country names, medals, populations, medal ranking and our new rankings .

4

Adding in the Countries

The Countries of the Commonwealth .  Load this text file and select all the countries listed, copy them. Back at the spreadsheet select paste and see what happens , we may need to adjust the formatting until we are satisfied

5

Population

This is more difficult , we will need to visit The Commonwealth secretariat Site for this info

 http://www.thecommonwealth.org/dynamic/Country.asp

6

Medals

http://www.commonwealthgames2002.org.uk/results/default.asp?ID=MD&Content=medals&Type=Medal

7

The Medal Rank

Using the Sort feature in the data menu

8

The New Rank

We will need to create a new column and use a formula so that we can see who was the real country with the most medals.

We will divide the countries medal tally with the population and will multiply that with 10000 to get a minable number we will then format those cells so we can see the differences easily.
